Gut or Spirit...can't be both

So as I sit here catching up on the television series SCANDAL I hear something that I guess normally wouldn't register but this time it did.  One of the characters was going off on another one because she was led to believe that this guy was a woman beater.  He was set up and framed very eloquently and precise to the point that her gut feeling was so strong she ended up dismissing the guy and breaking up with him; even threatening to kill him should he ever touch her again in any way.

Now mind you I know this is a show for entertainment and for someone to go to that length to frame someone for something as heinous as a woman beater is a little far fetched.  But it's not the act that got my attention but what he said to her.  She said "you look like a nice guy, but my gut is telling me your not" and he said "and Olivia (her boss) always says trust your gut".  And that was the end of that relationship.

Almost instantly the Spirit reminds me of the scripture 1 John 4:1 - Believe not every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they are from God...

The scripture does not say trust your gut feeling over the Spirit.  And contrary to popular opinion gut feeling is not a Euphemism to the Holy Spirit.  Because the woman trusted her gut feeling she missed out on a potential joyous relationship.  Scripture is very clear that when confronted with something that does not seem right don't trust yourself.  Plain and simple.  Trusting yourself means you are trusting your gut and your gut can be wrong; but the spirit, the spirit never lies.

Why?  Simple, because a human is comprised of three components.  We are a Spirit which makes up our Soul which lives in this Body.  Just as stated in...

1 Thessalonians 5:23 - Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword able to divide between the soul and spirit, and joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.

As Christians and believers we must preserve and nurture all three.  We feed our spirit which makes up our soul which governs our body.  If you feed your spirit filth you will exuberant filth.  You can't make a sound judgement or decision based on your gut.  Your gut may be right most of the time and it may be wrong sometimes, but either way if we do as scripture says then we take the guess work out of life and our situations.

The Apostle John makes it clear that we are not to trust folk at face value alone.  Face it, we are flawed individuals.  We were all born in sin and therefore by our own intellect alone cannot make sound judgments on everything.  But for the believer that's ok, because we know where our help comes from.  We don't go through life worrying about our situation because we know God has got us in his hands and is guiding our footsteps.  We know this life is temporary and therefore we are to live according to his will and not our own while on this earth.

It's definitely not easy, but as your relationship grows with the Lord you begin to trust Him on more and more situations in your life.  The Lord doesn't want drones he wants real Love and for that to happen, we have to learn how to Love as Christ loves.  That takes time and patience and I just thank God that he has more patience with me than i do myself sometimes. - Be blessed.
